Acer, which began the race- car laptop fad with its Ferrari- inspired, carbon fiber designs, and has long been out in front, is being passed by a rival that isn't shy about putting in the latest parts. As in the automotive industry, a racing notebook is as sexy as the engine and core parts that are put into it. The ASUS- Lamborghini VX2. S ($2,6. 50 street) moves to Intel's current Santa Rosa platform, in addition to optimizing every component that has to do with speed, from the 7,2. Vidia graphics. The engineers at ASUS seem to have taken their time molding the VX2. S into something Ferruccio Lamborghini would have been proud of. Just be prepared to pay luxury- car prices. When I slid my hands across the lid, it felt as if ASUS literally had removed a piece of the hood from the Lamborghini Murci. The yellow lacquered finish and the magnesium alloy surrounding the frame give it the look of an actual car hood, as opposed to the more laptop- like carbon fiber exterior of the Acer Ferrari 5. Because of heat issues, you have to appreciate how difficult it was for ASUS to use leather around the keyboard and palm rests. It's stitched leather, to boot; you actually can see the yellow stitches. Given all the professional detailing and heavier metals it uses, the VX2. S weighs more than most laptops in its class. It tips the scales at 7 pounds, almost 2 pounds heavier than the 5. Apple Mac. Book Pro 1. Apple chassis. It's heavier than the HP Pavilion dv. Toshiba Qosmio F4. AV4. 25 (6. 8 pounds), both of which have similar footprints. The VX2. S's 1. 5. The glare coming from the screen, however, is not that convenient for office productivity applications. Its 1,6. 80- by- 1,0. Mac. Book Pro (1,4. HP dv. 65. 00t (1,2. Too bad the VX2. S doesn't come with an HD DVD drive. The keyboard experience is almost flawless, but I'm not a big fan of the extremely hard- to- press mouse buttons. Just as a sports car has its moon roof, power steering, and tinted windows, the VX2. S comes with an HDMI- out, an e. SATA port, and a 1. This configuration is not being offered with an HD DVD- ROM drive despite the integration of an HDMI- out port. Both the Acer Aspire 5. Wire port, and dual- layer DVD burner are standard, as is usually the case with 1. It's nice to know that ASUS also tuned this car, er, laptop for peak performance. It uses a top- of- the- line 2. Video- encoding tests and Cine. Bench 9. 5 scores were about 4 percent faster, as well. You won't notice these differences in real- world scenarios, however. Graphics performance isn't overlooked either, thanks to the n. Vidia Ge. Force 8. M GT gaming card. Its 5. 12. MB of video memory is more typical of a gaming laptop such as the Dell XPS M1. Battery life, on the other hand, suffers from these power- thirsty components. The VX2. S's 7. 7- Wh battery could produce only 2 hours 6 minutes on Mobile. Mark 2. 00. 7 tests, but that's still about a half hour more than the Toshiba F4. AV4. 25's battery managed. Alas, you pay a hefty premium for all the luxury parts and carefully crafted design elements of the ASUS- Lamborghini VX2. S. Even Apple, known for luxurious price tags, sells its Mac. Book Pro 1. 5- inch for under $2,0. For race- car enthusiasts, price is probably not an object when it comes to the VX2. S. Its superior design and high- end performance parts are worthy of the Lamborghini name. Check out the. ASUS- Lamborghini VX2.
